I was Kidnapped By Unemployed Graduates – Pete Edochie
Wed Aug, 19 2009

Lagos, Nigeria - Popular Nigerian actor Pete Edochie, freed Monday night by the gunmen who kidnapped him a day earlier, has identified his kidnappers as "young graduates who did not have employment and were looking for how to survive".

Speaking with newsmen at his residence in Enugu, in Nigeria's South-east, Tuesday, Edochie described his experience in the hands of his abductors as 'ugly'.

He said, however, that no ransom was paid for his release, though the kidnappers had demanded 10 million naira (US$66,000), and that he did not lose any of his material possessions, including his telephone handset.

Edochie also said he neither knew where his abductors took him nor where he was dropped off.

``All I know is that I was able to pick a cab that took me to a hotel in Awka,'' he said. ``They told me they had no business kidnapping me at all. They did not manhandle me. They did not blindfold me, they did not gag me. They did not hack me. They did not tie me as they said I was their father.

``And somehow they knew a lot about me that I am good to people and that I assist people, particularly the down-trodden. They did not hide their faces and discussed freely with me. They bought me some drinks, made sure I did not `get alchoholically dry','' he said.

The actor said crime would be reasonably checked if government could ensure the welfare of the unemployed youth, as done in the developed countries.

Edochie's abduction was the latest in a series of kidnappings, now spreading across the country, which are apparently aping the situation in the restive Niger Delta region.

The wave of kidnappings has forced many states to pass tough laws prescribing the death penalty and life jail for convicted kidnappers.

It's quite alarming the extent at which things are happening in this country.Graduates, walking aimlessly in street-no job.The only the they resort to is ritual killing, kidnapping and robbery. My prayer is God will touch our leaders,so that they will know what to do before the time is up.

This is the result of cultism in our schools and corruption in education institutions where people you see have no business in education institution muscle in and get promoted by hungry lecturers until they're pushed out of the system. tell me what kind of product will this be? Armed robbers, Kidnappers, rebels and pirates. Shame on our leaders who are the product of this system and those who are accomplices in these crime. How could me have decended this low in the name of love of money. The easterners heve spread their plague among fellow Nigerians , love of money. Even the kidnapee even in a quire manner sympathises with these no do gooders. Being poor does not make you hopeless, so no excusses please.

Education as they say is the best legacy a nigerian child should acquire but now it is now a thorn in the flesh . Imagine a student who went to college, university and graduated after alot of night readings, lecturers stersses and money spent then he could not afford a job and now stays at home with his parents. He should have the right to do anything to make ends meet. Infact, kidnapping should be made legal because it is now a job opportunity for unemployed youths. It is self employment.Government please create jobs for the youths and stop looting our money to foreign Banks . Rex from Saudi Arabia . I am a nigerian hussling here because i am tired of being unemployed in Nigeria .

my reply to some comments about hepling our selfs is ... when Nigeria Education systems are flowped what do you think? the huge money Nigerian parents pays for their kids fees that is for those who can afford it, and couple with the years of kandle light in school, the corruption of lecturers, WAEC, NECO etc . After undergoing all these hard ways for years with the money involved the student will end up unemployd. And if you decide not to study you and your family will become a loughing storck plus your familly being bunch of illiterate, how can you stay in a society were everything is other way round? The Government has faild and will continue to fail untill somthing is done which is dis-allowing the old men into Nigeria politic

My fellow youths, crime dosen't pay no matter how u try to justify it. Easy money is very addictive it has a very strong pull and once you have had a taste of it u never want to let go until it lands u straight in the ditch.Remember that good things don't come easily so if your geting it easy be sure it wont stay for long no matter how u try to make it sound right. The future of our country is in our hands lets stop aportioning blame and start thinking positively we are not helping the situation by painting our country black infront of the whole world. Youths lets help our selves they don't want to employ us so lets try and accquire skills that will make us more dependent and make us less dependent on the government. Lets have one voice and if our own fathers, mothers and government won't listen the people out side will listen. BELIEVE IN YOUR COUNTRY BELIEVE IN A ONE NIGERIA.

The reality of life is based on what the government agenda is all about, what else can we say about nigeria government is it the failure, selfish interest or the poor governance, that make people feel that they are not important in the society, and this are the result that relate the good and bad behaviour of our youth. May God help nigerian youth.because things are getting worst and worst all the time.

It is easy to pass judgment on the so called kidnappers. How can you go to college and have your degrees and can not find a decent job? When hard working Nigerians see how the so called "elites" are stealing us dry why won't people take matters into their own hands"? What they did is wrong. I hope the the leaders find a way to start creating jobs by offering incentives to open up businesses and spend more money on research and development and not mercedes, rangerovers , Bmw and 20 bedroom houses that seat empty 90% of the time.kehn phily usa

Pete Edochie's incarceration was not a kidnap in the nigerian sense of crime, but a symbolic way of sending or passing a message accross. Going by how he said he was treated, and the fact that, as he also said, he nothing was taken from him, the young unemployed graduates merely chose a national symbol as a medium through which to pass their message. It is said that whatever you want to say that has not gone through the media is not important. This underscores the importance of the media and its practitioners. MOre importantly in Nigeria, the homevideo genre seems the most popular at the moment. That is why Pete Edochie is a good medium for sending messages accross. The importnat issue now is not the seeming action, but the message therein. Politicians and all Nigeria leaders, the youth are gettinig fed up and desperate. Beware, otherwise all university students may soon possess a gun. Imagine how much you will need for that amnesty project.

Kidnapping should be a crime that is punishable by death or at least life sentence. No one should be allowed to go free after kidnapping an innocent citizen. I don't care what stupid reasons they might have.
On Fri Aug, 28 2009 09:27   by Alex Ogwo
Yes! the kidnappers may say the right thing but does that give them the right to their fellow citizen who is aslo at the mercy of the bad governance. they should look for what to do for this country if truelly they are graduates. the problem here is that students fill Accantancy, Banking and Finance and other fast course inorder to get employed but is it helping the country? thanks

Kidnapping is an act of crime so the issue about job or no job is not a reason for this individuals to hold sombody for ransom that's criminal act and should be punished. If you feel bad about the way the system of the govt is workig the people been govern has the rigth to do revolution like Ghana did,and kill all the politician that looted govt money simple,That is justified even in the face of God
