Tension As Soldiers Patrol Jos After Murderous Riots
Sun Nov, 30 2008

Troops have been patrolling the central Nigerian city of Jos in an attempt to prevent further violence between Muslim and Christian gangs.

Hundreds of people have died in Saturday's violence that was triggered by a disputed local election.

Jos lies at the crossroads between the Muslim north and Christian south.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the main mosque where members of the Muslim community have been bringing their dead.

A spokesperson for the mosque said on Sunday that 367 bodies had been brought there to await burial.

It is also likely that the bodies of Christians killed in the riots were taken elsewhere, making the total number of dead uncertain.

Thousands flee fighting

The Red Cross said around 7,000 people had fled their homes and were sheltering in government buildings, an army barracks and religious centres.

A senior police official told the Reuters news agency that five neighbourhoods had been hit by violent clashes and that 523 people had been detained.

The riots were sparked after electoral workers failed to publicly post results of local elections held on Thursday.

Homes, churches and mosques were burnt down in the rioting fuelled by rumours that the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) had lost the elections to the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP).

The ANPP is considered a predominantly Muslim party, while the PDP is mainly Christian.

The violence is the worst since Umaru Yar Adua's inauguration as Nigeria's president in May 2007. Adua came to power following a vote that international observers dismissed as not credible.

Few Nigerian elections have been deemed free and fair since independence from Britain in 1960, and military takeovers have periodically interrupted civilian rule.

Jos, the administrative capital of Plateau state, had also been the scene of a week of violence between Christians and Muslims in September 2001, which also left hundreds dead.

Divide and rule old boy. Make happy Muslim North and a happy Christian South. A bit like The Indian Partition, which has been as successful as humans allow anything to be. Alternatively, let Britain recolonise you and get some sense back in to what used to a fabulous country.

This is one major reason why those who find their way out of the country will prefare to stay back there even when they suffer, becouse the place they call home lacks peace.PEACE is the least of their troubles abroad.May God help Nigeria from IGNORANCE,GREED AND SELFIHNESS.

the issue is not religion because among the so called plateau indigenes there are muslims - WASE LGA / SHENDAM LGA / GINDIRI LGA / DENGI LGA / LANGTANG LGA - etc so people should stop bringing religion as the cause. The main cause is just ethnicity - the so called indigenes like the biroms (which jonah jang belongs ) are not ready to accomodate other notable nigerian tribes - hausa / ibo / yoruba / south - south people / in their midst. All the so called elites in Plateau - Lar / Dariye / Jang / Tallen / Bali / Hirse / Botmang etc are not ready to see other people in Plateau state simply because they have failed their people woefully and were looking for a scape goat to hang.Their scape goat unfortuinately are the hausa / fulani (ido waka raina? wanda na saba gani kullum).

It is so shameful to hear that poor people who has nothing is killing themsleves over political issues that will not benefit them at the end. Where is the Governo of the State, where is the police, army or mobile policemen when this crisis is going on. When do we learn, (may be when only one person is left in Nigeria)when will those in power stand up to protect their citizens. It is so shameful to hear that there is instability in Nigeria, all our rulers know is to fill their pockets with our resources without delivering the actual message(protecting citizens) am so MAD.

While my people kill one another over nothing, politician feeds himself fat! Nigeria, what a country!

The sad thing about all these killings is that the politicians that these people are fighting and dying for do not provide basic amenities for the people that fought and died for them. I pray that these people are smart enough to draw the line in the future! May the souls of these innocent people rest in peace!

i cant believe that at this age political issues ans still seen as religious matter.now tell me how rigging elections relates to mosques and churches.it amazing that we die so cheaply.the problem here is thae most of us are mental drained, this inturn infuse hatred in our minds. Then come to think of it why must it always come form the north axis.there leader must address this before this spills this counrty as C.I.A have already mentioned.the rest of the counrty are very tired of the unghoustly acts always.

There must be more to this problem than religion. Are the people involved satisfied with their living conditions?I am sure many of these people are idle, hungry and homeless without hope.Government should play its own role in this regard. On the other hand, people involved should also renew their heart. If we claim we have God Almighty as our father,Muslim and Christians should see themselves as one rather than claiming supremacy through kiling each other.Let us be reasonable, how will God see anybody shedding blood of his most precious creation especially as God created us in his own image?.These people should see good examples in the countries of North America,Scandinavia and Europe where people of various religion and ethtnic background living and relating to each other through peaceful means irregardless of their religious and ethnic differences.

It can only be in Nigeria...where a political conflict metamorphoses into a religious massacre.

This is Obj and Yar'Adua's gift to Nigeria; this is their version of 'home-grown democracy'.

My question is,why the fighting and killing of innocent souls in the name of politics? i believe both christians and muslims are all human being and we serve same God; so i beg those involved in the crisis to please! put an end to all this killing. God bless all of us.
